Poser Debut

3d character and model creation is a big part of video games. And it is probably something that you are highly interested in.

There are a lot of different programs that can help you realize your models and characters in 3d but the Poser program is not one of them!

Huh? So why am I writing this article about Poser? And why is it on the "How to Make Video Games" website?

Well.. Poser still is very useful to you when it comes to video game making. Let me explain.

Poser is an amazing software tool that allows you and professional artists to create amazing figures and scenes. And with a lot of the difficult work being done for you. If you are a talented or trained artist you can really do some amazing work with Poser. But, if you are just an average skilled kind of person you can still do some amazing stuff.

This picture is a look at the poser workspace with a figure being worked on. You can see there is a whole lot of tools.

And What about the applications for video games?

Video game design nowadays is a rather complex process. There is a lot to it. And Poser can really help a lot with this by helping you to quickly create and see characters for your game. You have a whole lot of control and a whole lot of tools that will help you create all kinds of characters.

And if you are really fixated on how the software can actually be used in a video game it really does do a great job of creating animations that can be used in cut scenes, intros and animations within a game.

For Beginners

Poser is not really for beginners. It is a powerful program and it takes time to learn. But this shouldn't dissuade you. There is lots of support for it and lots of tutorials and materials. And you now have an option in that Smith Micro Software has now made Poser financially easy to acquire. They have put out something called Poser Debut which is a stripped down version of the full software. It is easier to use and less complicated so you can work your way through the tutorials and get some good stuff created sooner and easier. You also can learn a lot about 3d software and how it works.

With just a few clicks of the mouse I took the model shown above and I changed the pose to running.

And Here is a rudimentary scene that I created with a few available props.

I just whipped this together quickly to give you an idea of how easy it is. But don't let these simple images fool you. It is absolutely amazing the level of realism and detail that you can achieve with this program. Your imagination and skill is the only thing limiting you.
