Making Video Games for Girls
The video game industry has changed quite a bit over the past decade or so. I have to admit that ten years ago there probably weren't any women who designed video games. And there weren't a whole lot of girls playing them either. It took time for the industry to change and realize this oversight. My experience with playing online games in todays world tells me that many of these games have successfully realized that half of their audience is female. My point here, for you as a game designer, or potential game designer is to realize that your audience is often times more than just 13-19 year old boys.
Girls Making Video Games
And if you are a girl or young woman who is interested in game making then you have some wonderful opportunities ahead of you. Game making is a vibrant industry that is hungry for fresh ideas.
A video made some ten years ago - 1998
This is an interesting video made at Ted Talks. It is of Brenda Laurel. It is pretty old now, having been made in 1998 and the video game world has changed significantly since then but she made a valid point and her work probably had a big impact on the world of video game making. I recommend that if you are interested in making video games you watch this video. The first 5 minutes are rather dry but it gets more interesting.
If you really want to get into the field of video game making you have to always be aware that your audience might not consist solely of boys. I have played quite a few online games that consist of a fair mix of both men and women, boys and girls. Market research is an important part of any industry!
