Prince of Persia Sands of Time -
a look at creativiy in game design and crossing the borders between media

Wow, that is a big title I have written for this article but it kind of covers what I am trying to say here which is a bit nebulous but I will try. The main themes I am exploring here are creativity and how games are having an effect on movies.

If you are a gamer you are no doubt familiar with The Prince of Persia series of video games. It is a very successful franchise which is has now moved into the world of movies. It is a natural progression which has been happening to a lot of video games in the past few years.

And for good reason.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

When a young prince discovers an ancient dagger, it leads to a great evil befalling his father's land. The only way to contain these dark powers is through the impossible feat of controlling the Sands Of Time. With no other choice, our hero aims to try. So begins a new adventure in the haunted, scorching sands of Persia.

When it comes to making a video game there really are no limits -other than your imagination. And this game/movie is a good example of that. We take a Persian theme with the landscape, architecture, culture and more and we wrap it into a great theme and concept of manipulating time and we have one heck of an imagintive story/game.

This concept of taking a real world exotic culture and taking it to new levels is a very successful concept and a talk a lot about this in my article about the game Assassin's Creed 2 which takes place in Renaissance Italy.

So my message about that is a message of encouragement to you if you are designing or making a video game. Or even if you want to make a video game. Create whatever you want out of your imagination and use it! Take real world things and then expand on them. See what you can come up with!

Now about the Crossing from game to movie

I read a little something about the movie which said that the original script for the movie was derived directly from the video game. Well, duh, you are probably saying but there are other important things that have happened when it comes to the game to movie transition. Yes the story has been transferred but other things too like the setting, characters, world and even the way characters move like the way our Prince jumps off buldings or jumps along the sides of buildings and from place to place. This is significant because this kind of body motion came to the movies after being invented in video games.

And of course, the process has been working in the opposite direction too. What video game doesn't owe a tribute to movies? They are both very visual mediums and movies have influenced just about everything in our lives. It's just kind of neat to see the circle closing and now games are influencing movies and how they look and feel.

Ok my final thought

If you are designing video games or are thinking about it give some thought to how it would be as a movie. Remember that you are limited only by your imagination and.... wouldn't it be so cool to see your game made into a movie?
