Cheap and/or free game design software recommended by an actual game artist

So you want to do artwork for game design but don't know what software you should use. And worse yet you might not have much money to spend. So what kind of software should you get.

Your goal is to get some software that will actually work for you and also give you skills that you can transfer over to the more professional products later in your development.

If you are on a budget and are looking for some free or inexpensive tools to make your own video game here are what the artist of this game recommends:

  • Pencil - Great software for drawing and rendering 2d images and animation
  • Blender - Free software for rendering 3d images and models. Blender now has a complete suite of tools including tools for game creation
  • Toon Boom Studio - Not free but simply amazing software. Toon Boom Studio is the best 2D animation software to learn and create animation with. Ideal for students and hobbyists looking for an easy-to-use animation program, excellent for teachers and educational institutions, Studio makes all animation techniques accessible to users, offering them the most creative and rewarding experience.
  • Older versions of Toon Boom: The current version is 6.0 but you can get earlier versions for a very reasonable price on amazon:
